Ph.D. programmes

Ph.D. programmes are linked to key research areas and integrated in a number of collaborat-ing research schools covering geology and geography. Programmes are integrated in two ba-sic schools in geology and geography. Three further schools focus on specific themes and integrate the national training in specific subjects. Ph.D. studies are supported by a suite of laboratories, specialist equipment, reference collections, databanks, a computer network, li-braries and technician corps that makes the Geocenter the largest in northern Europe.

• The Research School in Geology focuses on the description of processes in planet Earth through observations of structure and chemistry of rocks, minerals and fluids as well as indirect observations of the inner Earth. The school covers all major disciplines in applied and general geological sciences: mineralogy, petrology, geochemistry, geophysics, palaeontology and hydrogeology: www.geol.ku.dk
  
  
• The Research School in Geography: The focus of the research school is the interaction be-tween human activities and natural resources with emphasis on flows, movements and spatial aspects of biophysical and social dynamics: www.geogr.ku.dk
  
  
• COGCI: The Copenhagen Global Change Initiative is hosted by the University of Copenha-gen in collaboration with the Geocenter, the Danish Meteorological Institute and the National Environmental Research Institute. The purpose of this research school is to initiate and con-duct research projects in the area of Global Change comprising global atmospheric science and climate, aquatic ecosystems (including the oceans), terrestrial ecosystems, earth system analysis and modelling, land-ocean interactions, past global change and the hydrological cycle: www.cogci.dk
  
  
• FIVA: The International Research School in Water Resources is hosted by the Geological Institute as a partnership between 9 universities, government and private research institutes in Denmark. The objective is to strengthen and coordinate the research education in Denmark within water resources and to establish a scientific forum for exchange of knowledge and research results: www.fiva.dk
  
  
• SEDBAS: Research school in The Geology of Sedimentary Basins and their Resources is hosted by the Geological Institute. It covers a broad spectrum of disciplines including stratigraphy, sedimentology, geophysics and geochemistry: www.sedbas.dk
